In-depth knowledge of the Chinese remuneration system: from pre-tax to post-tax
For most workers, there is often a difference between the “pre-tax salary” on the labour contract and the “post-tax salary” actually in hand. This part of the disappearance is mainly to two locations: the five-risk one-year pension (social insurance and housing pension) and the personal income tax.
1. Five-percent: Your invisible benefits
The five-risk one is not just a deduction, but a mandatory social security requirement:
- Old-age insurance: 8% personal, 16% business. This is the basis for your retirement pension.
- Medical insurance2% personal, 8% - 10% business. For outpatient reimbursement and hospital coverage.
- Unemployment insurance: a lower percentage (usually 0.5 per cent of individuals) and a transitional allowance in case of loss of employment.
- Housing Provident Fund: between 5 and 12% of the contributions, equal to the equivalent of 1:1 for the enterprise and the individual. This is a fully personal amount that can be used for the purchase of premises, rental of premises or withdrawal from service.
2. Personal income tax and special surcharges
China's current tax collection point (the combined basic deduction cost) is $5,000 a month. However, in order to reduce the burden on specific groups of people, the Government has introduced a system of “special deductions”:
- Education of children2000 yuan per person per month.
- Support for the elderly: Up to $3000 per month.
- Housing rental/credit interest800-1,500 yuan per month, depending on the city.
- Infant and child care: Under 3 years of age, 2000 yuan per month.
By making a reasonable declaration of these deductions, the “taxable income” can be significantly reduced, thus reducing or even eliminating the amount of tax.
3. Cost of work for enterprises: the other side of a coin
When you get your 10000 after-tax pay, the firm may actually spend more than 16,000. In addition to paying your pre-tax salary, the enterprise has to cover a higher portion of the combined five-risk package. Understanding this cost structure helps to take a more professional place in career planning and salary negotiations.
