DI: Why is your hard drive smaller?
You were not deceived when you bought a 500-GB hard drive and you were stuck on a computer and found it to be only about 465-GB. It's because... Decimal units and Binary Owing to differences in computations between the two. Understanding the difference between the two is key to resolving the problem of storage computing.
Core differences
- Harddisk manufacturer: Use decimal. 1 KB = 1,000 Bytes。
- Operating systems (Windows): Use binary. 1 KB (actually KiB) = 1,024 Bytes.
- Conversion formula: 500,000,000,000 / (1024 * 1024 * 1024) ≈ 465.66 GB。
KB vs KiB: What's the difference?
In order to eliminate confusion, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) introduced new prefixes to distinguish between the two:
- KB (Kilobyte): 10-based tungsten (10^3 = 1000). Commonly used to measure network bandwidth.
- KiB (Kibibyte): 2-based thallium (2 ^10 = 1024). is commonly used for computer memory and internal system calculations.
- MB vs MiB: Similarly, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, and 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes. The difference between the two. 4.8%。 The larger the unit, the more significant the difference is.
Common application scene
- Software development: When processing document upload restrictions, it is usually necessary to calculate bytes accurately to prevent exceeding the server configuration.
- Cloud services purchase: Cloud service providers (e.g. AWS, Azure) usually charge GiB, while users may be accustomed to GB estimations.
- Network monitoring: Flow statistics are usually done in decimal MB, while some downloaders show MiB.
