The power of pie in data narratives.
The pie chart and its variant ring chart, Doughnut Chart, are one of the most understandable forms of visualization of the human brain. It represents the numerical value by the size of the sector area, showing intuitively the ratio between the parts and the whole. When you have to answer, “Who has the largest market share? “How does the budget be allocated?” or “How does it go? When it comes to such issues, the pie is the best option.
Ring and pie: How do we choose?
The ring map is more modern than the pie map in visual terms and the central white area can be used to place aggregate values or titles, increasing the density of information. In our tools, you can switch the pie between the pie map (0%) and the strip map (e.g. 80%) by adjusting the hollow radius.
The technique of producing professional charts
1. Limit number of sectors: When sectors exceed 6-8, the pie charts become crowded and difficult to read, and it is proposed to classify the small items as “other”.
2. Sort Logic: It is usually suggested that the largest sector be placed at 12 o'clock in a row from large to small, consistent with human visual scanning habits.
3. Colour Scheme: Select a contrast but a uniform color. The pre-set “hot orange gold” is well suited for commercial reporting, while the “spectroscopy” is suitable for scientific research or educational presentation.
