Why use online code comparison tools?
It hurts a lot.
Manually comparing the two versions of the code is painful, and minor spelling errors, redundant spaces or missing semicolons are difficult to detect in the eye.
Solutions
Use LCS-based An automated comparison tool for algorithms. It can identify all differences in milliseconds and display them intuitively in a colour that ensures that no detail is omitted.
Core technology: maximum public subseries (LCS)
This tool uses the classic dynamic planning algorithm - the longest public sub-series (Longest Common Subsequence).
The rationale is to break the two paragraphs into row arrays, looking for the longest line series between them. Lines that do not belong to this sequence are marked with deletion (red) in the original text and with new (green) in the modified text. This algorithm ensures that the results are most consistent with human instincts, namely, to find the smallest path of change.
Main application scene
- Code Review (Code Review) : Before submitting the code, quickly check where you have changed to prevent error or error.
-
Profile Validation
: Comparison of the production and development environments
.envorconfig.jsonVariance. - Document Version Comparison : Compare text changes in two versions of Markdown documents or draft protocols.
- Discontinuation of interference : Automatically ignores (or identifies) spaces, indentations, differences resulting from formatting tools.
How do you use it?
- Pastes an older version to the left (original text).
- Pastes a newer version to the right (modified text).
- Click the Start Contrast button.
-
View results in the output area below: with
+..and the green line represents the new, with-, and the red line is deleted.
3 Typical contrast scenes
Apart from generic codes, the following three scenarios are most frequently present in day-to-day development and can significantly increase efficiency by using well-used Diff.
Scenario one: Code Review PR Diff
Before the Pull Request is submitted, the contents of the locally modified document are then posted in the left and the main version in the left and right columns respectively, so that the lines can be quickly identified as true logical changes and those that are only formatting adjustments. This would avoid the wide range of meaningless gaps identified during the evaluation, and allow comments to focus on algorithms and architecture.
Scenario 2: Comparison of Profile Versions
The engineers always need to compare. nginx.conf、docker-compose.yml or .env Differences between the production and advance environment of documents. A redundant port map or missing environment variable can cause a linear accident, and line-by-line high-lighting allows you to locate key configurations in 10 seconds.
Scenario III: Bilingual paragraphs contrasting translations
Once the product file or technical document is translated, the original Chinese text is placed in both sides of the translation and the English translation is placed in the input box, and the text is aligned quickly to check whether there is an missing paragraph. Even if the language is completely different, the tool will identify sentences of similar length or markers as identical, and the missing sentence will be clearly presented in the form of new/deleted sentences.
What do you think of the color and the mark?
The table of comparison results uses industry-wide colour codes, which are used to convey changes quickly with the symbol column:
- Green Line (+ No.): to indicate that this line is in the modified versionAddThe content. This is how new codes and configurations appear in the right input box.
- Red Line (#-): means that this line was received from the original versionDeleteGot it. If a line is removed by error, red light will remind you to recover at the first time.
- No Color No Symbol Line: The contents of the left and right are identical and are part of the unaltered public line, which is used as the context anchor.
Options for presentation modes: long files (over 300 rows) are suitable for current use of this toolSide-by-side visionThink, and place the old and new lines on both sides of the same line, so that the context is aligned when rolling vertically. Sub-paragraphs change (within 20 lines) is more appropriate to focus on interrelationship differences, i.e., consecutive deletion lines follow the addition of new lines and read like "delete first" and then add "edited notes".
Common Diff Failures and Solutions
Sometimes the naked eye does not see the difference, but the tool still labels the whole line as different. The following table summarizes the three most high-frequency "false differences" trap and quick fixes:
| Problem phenomena | Reasons | Solutions |
|---|---|---|
| The characters are the same as the eyes, but the whole line is red. | All-angle spaces 's 'mixed with half-angle spaces', or Chinese points incorrectly written in English | Open "Show invisible characters" in the editor, and replace them with the same code |
| One space at the end of the line causes the whole line to differ | Unsatisfactory handling of line end spaces when different editor automatically saves | Pre-process text for the "Deletion Line Ending Space" function of the editor before pasting |
| The content is identical but all is marked as deleted + added | Windows CRLF line breaks differ from Unix LF line breaks | Repainting after the editor has harmonized line breaks to LF at the bottom right corner |
Relationship with Git Diff
If you know what you're doing in the line of command, git diff, the line number of the tool output is found,+/- Symbol System and git diff --unified Fully compatible. You can copy the diff output in the terminal to the left and right input box, and the tool will re-render into a colourful, readable format, which is particularly suitable for taking change logs back to the local level after intercepting them on a remote server without IDE.
This tool is fully operated locally in your browser, and your code will not be uploaded to any server, ensuring the privacy and security of the data.
