Policy context
China has been implementing a delayed retirement policy since 2025, which is an important step in addressing the ageing of the population and in guaranteeing the sustainable development of pension funds. The policy of delayed retirement will be implemented in stages, with a gradual increase in the retirement age.
Delayed programmes for four groups of people
1. Men:From 60 to 63, with a delay of 1 month every 4 months
2. Women workers:From 50 to 55, with a delay of 1 month every 4 months
3. Women cadres:Extension from 55 to 58 with 1 month delay every 4 months
4. Flexible employment:Reference to employee standards
Flexible retirement options
The policy allows employees to choose flexible retirement, and specific retirement periods can be selected within three years of the statutory retirement age. Early retirement reduces pensions and increases pensions when retirement is delayed.
Pension calculation
The pension consists of a basic pension and a pension in the personal account. Delays in retirement increase the number of years of contributory service and the basic and personal account pensions, thereby increasing monthly pension income.
Transitional arrangements
The policy on delayed retirement is organized in a transitional period, with different programmes for the population in different years of birth. This tool will automatically calculate the applicable policy according to the year of birth.
