Document metadata integrity guide
What's file metadata?
Metadata is the data describing the data, i.e. information about the document itself. Each file contains two types of information: actual content (photo pixels, document text) and metadata (file name, size, creation time, etc.).
For photographs, metadata are particularly rich and may contain sensitive privacy information such as camera settings, location (GPS coordinates), timing of the shooting.
What's the EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Platform) is a standard photo metadata format for digital cameras, stored mainly in JPEG and TIFF file, which contains:
-
Camera information:
Brand, Model (e.g. iPhone 15 Pro)
-
Photography parameters:
Aperture, fast door speed, ISO
-
GPS coordinates:
The exact latitude of the location of the shooting
-
Time stamp:
The exact time of the second.
-
Direction information:
Cameras are heading, pictures are spinning.
Privacy risk tips
When you release a picture containing GPS information to the web, anyone can extract your exact location from the metadata. The photos taken by the mobile phone are by default recorded as GPS information, with precision of up to a few metres.
Suggested use of this site before sharing photos
EXIF Remove Tool
Clear all location and equipment information.
Support for document formats
-
JPEG/JPG:
Support complete EXIF data, including GPS
-
PNG:
Usually EXIF is not included, but basic file information is available
-
WebP:
It could be EXIF, depending on the camera equipment.
-
Other documents:
Extract file name, size, type, change time
Why can't this tool read the full EXIF?
Original API (File API) for browser can read the content and basic properties of the file, but resolve EXIF The label requires a specific binary resolution logic. This tool currently provides basic metadata extraction, complete EXIF resolution dependent on browser Canvas API support information.
