What's the Hash function? How does it work?

Hash function (Hash) Function is an algorithm that maps input data of any length to a fixed length output. This output value is called "Hashi" or "digital fingerprints". A good Hashi algorithm has several key features:

  • (b) Determination: The same input always produces the same output.
  • Quick calculation: Hash values can be generated quickly for large data.
  • Avalanche effects: Minor changes (even one byte) in the input data can lead to large and unpredictable changes in output results.
  • Collision resistance: It is extremely difficult to find two different inputs that produce the same Hash value.

MD5 vs SHA-256: Which one should we choose?

In different applications, it is important to choose the appropriate Hashi algorithm:

  • MD5: Generate 128 Bit Hash value. Although extremely fast, due to serious collision defects, no encryption or safety-related scenes are currently recommended. However, it remains very popular in non-security areas such as verifying the integrity of document transmissions.
  • SHA-1: Generates 160 bit Hash. Security slightly higher than MD5, but also proven no longer safe, mainstream browser no longer supported SHA-1 certificate.
  • SHA-256: It belongs to the SHA-2 family, producing 256 bits of Hash. It's the standard for the current industry, and it's widely used in SSL. Certificates, block chains (e.g. bitcoin) and system files validation.

Addressing document integrity verification challenges

When you download large software from the Internet (e.g., a system mirror or developer tool), the publisher usually provides a series of SHA-256 Check the code. By using ours. Document Hash function, you can calculate the Hash value of the file directly from the local browser and compare it with the officially supplied value. If the two are identical, it is stated that the document was not damaged or altered during the transmission.

Security alarm: Hash is not encrypted

Attention, Hashi is one. One-way process It's not reversible. Unlike symmetric or asymmetric encryption, the Hash value is not intended to hide information and be restored later, but to mark the unique nature of the information. It is not enough to use Hashi alone when storing user passwords, and generally need to be accompanied by Salting and Slow Hashi (e.g., Bcrypt) to fight against the rainbow watch attack.
